How Is the Unemployment Rate Calculated?
The unemployment rate is found by dividing the number of unemployed by the labour force (the employed + job seekers). Those who have given up looking for work are counted as outside the labour force and are not reflected in the rate; therefore “broadly defined” unemployment (idle labour) may be higher.
Unemployment and Economic Growth
Growth and unemployment generally move in opposite directions: as the economy grows, employment rises and unemployment falls. However, growth may take time to feed through to employment.
