What Does the Current Account Deficit Mean?
A current account deficit is a situation where a country’s payments to the outside world (imports, profit/interest transfers) exceed the income it earns from abroad (exports, tourism). The deficit is financed by external funding (capital inflows, reserves); hence its sustainability matters.
Current Account Balance and the Exchange Rate
A high current account deficit increases the need for external financing and can put pressure on the lira. Energy imports and gold imports are among the main drivers of the current account deficit; therefore the deficit data are watched together with exchange-rate expectations.
