Gram Gold or Quarter Gold: Which Is More Advantageous?
The most common choice gold investors face in Türkiye: gram gold or quarter gold? Both contain pure gold but differ in premium structure, liquidity and purpose.
Short answer: for investment purposes only, gram gold is usually more advantageous. Below you will find a detailed comparison.
Amount of Pure Gold
Gram gold is sold directly by the gram (1 gram, 2.5 gram, 5 gram bars). A quarter coin contains about 1.75 grams of pure gold (for the new-date Cumhuriyet). A half coin ~3.5 grams, a full coin ~7 grams of pure gold.
So for a 100-gram gold investment you can buy ~57 quarter coins or 100 one-gram bars. The amount of pure gold is essentially the same; the difference lies in premium and liquidity.
Premium (Jeweller Margin)
Coin gold (quarter, half, full) sells 3–10% above the gram equivalent. This premium reflects the jeweller's labour, brand and demand intensity. In high-demand periods (holidays, wedding season) the premium can rise to 15%.
On gram gold bars the premium is much lower (0.5–2%). So for the same amount of pure gold, gram gold is bought more cheaply.
Liquidity and Sale
Coin gold is widely liquid in Türkiye; it can be quickly converted to cash at any jeweller. Certified gram gold bars are equally liquid; uncertified small bars are bought at a discount by some jewellers.
For fast small-amount liquidity, quarter gold is practical (e.g. sell one quarter for an urgent need). For large amounts held long-term for investment, gram gold provides a cost advantage.
Gift and Cultural Value
Quarter gold is the classic product culturally given as a gift at weddings, circumcisions and births. Gram gold cannot replace it for this use. A balanced gift + investment mix: gram gold for investment, quarter gold for gifts/liquidity.
Frequently Asked Questions
- For the same money, does gram gold or quarter gold buy more pure gold?
- Gram gold. Due to the jeweller premium on quarter gold, the same TRY buys fewer grams of pure gold in quarters than in gram.
- Is quarter gold bad for investment?
- Not bad, just an expensive entry. Meaningful for those wanting gift + liquidity; for pure investment, gram gold is more efficient.
